AAAS Awarded Nearly $20M to Establish Three Distinct Initiatives Supporting Representation in STEMM Fields

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world’s largest multidisciplinary scientific society, today announced three awards adding up to nearly $20 million from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Tiger Global Impact Ventures (TGIV) and The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. These initiatives will drive a more inclusive science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM) ecosystem

AAAS CEO Statement on #ShutDownSTEM and Black Lives Matter

Science, engineering, and medicine are not immune to the discrimination, subjugation, and silencing of minority colleagues and voices. The reasons for this are deeply ingrained in the systems that govern the conduct of these fields. When we hold up a mirror to the scientific enterprise, we see that it’s not only politicians and law enforcement that need to be reminded that Black lives matter.

We are of our community – and our community is in pain. We cannot escape the problems of society – for we carry the successes and challenges of our community with us wherever we go. Left unchecked, racism, sexism, homophobia, and fear of the other can enter any organization or community – and destroy the foundations upon which we must build our future.
